Amazing Taiwan: Seven Stories from DJ Saucey

DJ Saucey has always been one of the trailblazers on Taiwan's DJ dance music scene.

As he prepares for two final parties in Taichung and Taipei, and then head back to Vancouver to take care of family matters, WaaKao caught up with the legend and asked him what his seven amazing moments were from his seven-year stint in Taiwan. (in no particular order)

1. Eden's Earthquake Night

SL and I were playing back to back at Deep Inside party and soon, the walls started shaking and everyone starts looking at each other. Since Eden was on the top floor of the 98 building, everyone was kind of freaked out. And then the music went out. We all just looked at each other but then in one big burst, the music flipped back on and everyone just started dancing like they had never danced before.

2. SL's Tears

At Soulutions at Luxy, it was DJ SL's birthday and everyone was getting nuts. The crowd was really into SL's music and he dropped a track that he had just produced. I think it was the first time he played it and right at that moment, fireworks of confetti were shot out from the stage and everyone was screaming at the top of their lungs. The whole crowd was going off to a song that SL wrote and I looked over at him and I thought I saw tears streaming out of his eyes.

3. Chifunk's Mountain Parties

Going down to Taichung is always fun for Taipei DJs. And Chifunk's mountain parties were a blast because even though you were high on a stage, it felt like a very intimate venue. There were so many different people getting down and it was so fun being surrounded by the jungle. Chifunk should bring those parties back.

4. Orange Boy's Antics

I can't really remember which Loop party in Kenting it was, but I do know it was one of the first times I met Junior and Megan. I was playing and Orange Boy, the guy who dressed up in crazy costumes and moved around on stilts, walked out into the crowd. Now, anyone who sees a nine-foot Martian with body armor is going to get a lot of attention, but on this day, he was using a bench grinder, which shot sparks out from his outfit. I was flabbergasted that clubbing in Taiwan had come so far.

5. NYE Eden After Party

About noon at one of the maddest after parties Eden ever had, I was in the kitchen in the back with the owner. I started throwing up into one of those big blue barrels. Right at that moment, the manager came to me and said, "Saucey, it's your turn to play." I went up there and proceeded to play what I thought was one of the best sets I've ever played in my life.

6. The Hospital Jammy Jamm

Taiwan has taken its toll on my body and there have been quite a few times I have been laid up in the hospital. I had been in the hospital for about two weeks and it was DJ Hooker's birthday bash. On Friday night, I felt better but the doctor told me I had to stay, as they like to do in Taiwanese hospitals. I was going stir crazy so I told the nurses I was going downstairs to use the Internet. I hid my normal clothes underneath my hospital robe and walked out of the door. I went to my scooter and took the hospital stuff off and rushed to Luxy. I proceeded to play for two hours with the tubes still sticking out of my arm. I didn't drink or even smoke. As soon as my set was over, I rushed back to the hospital and put the robe back on. When I got up to my floor, the nurses were chastising me for being on the Internet too long. The next week right before I was about to get out of the hospital, my picture was in the newspaper from that last Friday's gig. I showed it to the nurses and told that that was where I really was.

7. Johnny Fiasco is in the House

Johnny Fiasco was in town for Sabbatical and it was Halloween. I had a house party and people were all dressed up in crazy costumes that had been worn for hours and looked awful by now. It was getting so crazy that me, Trix, and Danny went out to get tattoos and were banging on the tattoo place wasn't even open. Anyway, back at the house, it was filled with as many people as it could hold. When Johnny Fiasco got on the decks, everyone just started going crazy and jumping up and down and dancing. It felt like a mini-earthquake almost. A few days after, I saw a neighbor and he told me, "You and your friends really like to dance." I just laughed and agreed with him.

Saucey promises to be back and play because he has so many friends in Taiwan. Until then, people in Vancouver can keep an eye out for him coming to a local club. He also has a track coming out on Sona's Nosa Recordings that is a remix of Think (DeMarcus Lewis remix).
